Testing the gravity p-median model empirically

چکیده
Regarding the location of a facility, the presumption in the widely used p-median model is that the customer opts for the shortest route to the nearest facility. However, this assumption is problematic on free markets since the customer is presumed to gravitate to a facility by the distance to and the attractiveness of it. The recently introduced gravity p-median model offers an extension to the p-median model that account for this. The model is therefore potentially interesting, although it has not yet been implemented and tested empirically. In this paper, we have implemented the model in an empirical problemof locating vehicle inspections, locksmiths, and retail stores of vehicle spare-parts for the purpose of investigating its superiority to the p-median model. We found, however, the gravity p-median model to be of limited use for the problem of locating facilities as it either gives solutions similar to the p-median model, or it gives unstable solutions due to a non-concave objective function. © 2015 The Authors. An empirical test of the gravity p-median model Authors
A customer is presumed to gravitate to a facility by the distance to it and the attractiveness of it. However regarding the location of the facility, the presumption is that the customer opts for the shortest route to the nearest facility. This paradox was recently solved by the introduction of the gravity p-median model. The model is yet to be implemented and tested empirically. We implemented...
متن کاملA compelling argument for the gravity p-median model
The p-median model is used to locate P facilities to serve a geographically distributed population. Conventionally, it is assumed that the population always travels to the nearest facility. Drezner and Drezner (2006, 2007) provide three arguments on why this assumption might be incorrect, and they introduce the extended the gravity p-median model to relax the assumption. We favour the gravity p...
متن کاملCalculation of three-regions input-output coefficients, hybrid Location Quotient - Gravity Method, (Case Study: oil-rich regions, Tehran Province, and the rest national economies)
Regional policy requires the use of a suitable economic model. One of the common patterns in this field is the multi-region input-output model in which the national economy is subdivided into regions with different comparative advantages and on the basis of specific policies. Multi-regional input-output data preparation in Iran has always been one of the main challenges in using them to measure...
متن کاملHÖGSKOLAN DALARNA School of Technology and Business Studies An application of gravity p-median model with different distance decay functions
The location-allocation problem has been studied over 50 years and recently a new method called “gravity p-median model” is introduced to the public. The key idea is that the probability of customers visit a facility is based on a distance decay function rather than directly choose the nearest one. An empirical test shows that the solution of gravity p-median model with exponential distance dec...
متن کاملEngaging PhD Students: Investigating the Role of Supervisor Support and Psychological Capital in a Mediated Model
Organizational scholars have empirically outlined the significance of support features and psychological capital on individual outcomes. In the present study, we attempted to address the dearth of research on PhD students’ engagement via empirically testing the crucial role of supervisor support and psychological capital. A total of 125 Ph.D. students of 11 different nationalities were recruite...
